“It means,” said Aslan, “that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backward.”
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe – C. S. Lewis
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1
How many Christmas movies have you watched this season? I have watched a few too many, to tell the truth. One major recurring theme is the idea of the magic of Christmas, the idea that the season brings a touch of the supernatural. There is a hint of truth in that statement, but it gets lost in romance and holiday events. The true magic of Christmas is truly supernatural in that Christ, who is God, came to earth in the form of a baby, but the story doesn’t end there. It is only the beginning.
The Miracles of Christmas
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:12
The Christ candle represents light and purity. When Christ was born, the world was dark and full of turmoil and violence. He came to bring light into the darkness. He was the light. His birth was supernatural. The Spirit of God descended upon a virgin. Then, God aligned the circumstances of Christ’s birth to fulfill all the prophecies of old. During his ministry as an adult, Christ performed multiple miracles. He calmed the sea, healed the sick, and even raised the dead. His entire ministry was full of the supernatural.
The Deeper Magic
6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:6-8
However, the greatest “magic” was the fact that Christ came down and took our place. As C. S. Lewis wrote, the magic that most people talk about is an ethereal feeling. The “deep magic” is the work of God through the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. He became flesh and walked on earth, and then he became the sacrifice for our sins. Even that wasn’t the end. He was resurrected and conquered death for us. That is the deep magic of Christmas: Salvation.
The Mystery Revealed
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory
Colossians 1:27
Accepting the gift of salvation opens up an even greater magic and mystery. It allows Christ to enter into our soul so that we not only have the hope of Heaven in the future, but we also have the hope in our everyday lives. He is here in the present with us and that is the greatest gift of Christmas.
The Mercies of the Moment
22 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23
A new year is upon us. It’s a fresh start, but we can have a fresh start with Christ every day of our lives. Still, New Years is a good time to stop and evaluate where we are and where we need to be in our journey. We all take detours now and again, but every day we have the chance to get back on the right road. Let’s take the greatest gift of Christmas into the New Year because with Christ in us we can face the future with confidence and hope.
Happy New Year!
