“Some single mind must be master, else there will be no agreement in anything.”
Abraham Lincoln
19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Matthew 18:19-20
Agreement
Ever noticed how much more gets accomplished when everyone is on the same page? My eye doctor has proof that a certain eye drop prescription helps maintain my eye health. The insurance company thinks my health is important. The pharmacy wants to fill my prescription. Yet, I still don’t have my prescription. What’s the problem?
The Oath
28 And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding; 29 They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;
Nehemiah 10: 28-29
In the previous chapters of Nehemiah the people had found the books of the law, and the priests had it read aloud and explained the meaning to the people. When they realized that they were far from fulfilling the law, they wept and repented. Chapter ten lists all the leaders along with the people who agreed to take an oath to follow the laws of God. The source of their agreement was the acceptance of God as master.
One Master
Lincoln had it right: there must be a single mind as master. The problem is everyone thinks that they are the single mind when that place belongs to God. Each of the groups I mentioned in the introduction all say they have my health as a priority, but they each have their own agendas, rules, and procedures. The trouble is getting them to work in concert. They each want their way.
Matthew 18:19-20 says that if two people agree on anything if it is in His name. The key to agreement is allowing God to be the master. When we agree together on what God says, then He will move and make it so. Prayer is not about changing God’s mind as much as it is about changing our hearts.
Obey
The people in Nehemiah 10 agreed to obey the laws of God. They took an oath to be obedient or suffer the consequences as laid out in the oath. We, too, have to be willing to follow in obedience or expect the consequences. Like a good parent, God uses tough love for our benefit. The first step is setting aside our agendas so that we can follow God’s will. We have to trust and obey. When we all agree that God is the master, then we will see a movement of God like we have never seen before.
In the Midst
In the meantime I am waiting on God to handle the issue of my eye health. I have agreement in writing from two of the three parties concerned, but the third party involves technology coming to agreement. I’m resting in a divine intervention for that one. I wrote this post while I waited. The point is that while we wait for God to move in His perfect timing, there is still work to be done. There is no need to yell at the pharmacist when we have access to the Great Physician. You have to agree He’s worth waiting on.
