“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
1 Peter 5:7
Default Setting
What is your default setting when you feel anxious or overwhelmed? Not so long ago I realized my default setting is to duck and cover like during the tornado drills of old. But God has been trying to work on me to show me a better way. Instead of reacting out of fear He wants me to come to Him, trusting Him to handle situations. He wants me to let go of the fears and the outcome of situation and hold on to Him, knowing that He will work it out.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28
Reset
In the process of working on my default setting, God is trying to reset my initial reaction from fear to faith. It’s not an easy process; there is no easy button. He has sent me a few resources and a challenge of sorts as well. I want to share with you a few of those resources and ask for your help in completing my challenge.
Resources
I have been blessed with an advanced reader copy of a new book by Joanna Weaver titled Embracing Trust. I will be posting a full review of the book in my newsletter that will post on August 19th, but the main idea is about learning to trust God. It has really resonated with me. The idea of letting go of our fears so that we can open our hands to receive what God has for us has been part of the challenge to reset my default buttons. God loves us and wants the best for us, but we have to be willing to let go of good in order to receive the best He has for me.
Another resource was the biography of George Muller. His decision to rely totally on the Lord for provision resulted in the creation and sustaining of several orphanages that housed thousands of children. He did his part but left provision of funding and resources to God, and he was never disappointed. He lived by faith. This has inspired me as well to develop the same kind of faith and trust in God.
Challenge
God has blessed me with a writing project that requires me to study the very things that I have felt lead to work on in my own spiritual journey. I am hoping that some of you might be willing to give me a hand. I have learned that when I am overwhelmed, my first stop should be prayer followed by scripture reading. So, I was hoping you might share the following:
- I am wondering what scriptures do you return to and lean on when you are overwhelmed?
- What is it about that scripture that comforts you?
- Do you go to different scriptures for different situations (work, family, finances…)?
If you are willing to give a sister a hand, please leave a comment with your answers, or if you prefer more privacy, email me at linda@lindalyle.com. I would love your help and insights.
Amen Ms. Linda. It’s a process, that’s for sure ma’am; but one that us absolutely worth the effort. God’s blessings ma’am.
J. D. do you have any go-to verses for when you feel overwhelmed?
Wonderful post. I am a work in progress; but, I am learning to trust and lean on Jesus.
I can echo your statement, “In the process of working on my default setting, God is trying to reset my initial reaction from fear to faith. It’s not an easy process; there is no easy button. “
Dawn,
Do you have any verses that you go back to when you are feeling overwhelmed?
A couple of verses that really speak to me are Psalm 34:19 “Many are the afflictions of the righteous; But the LORD delivers him out of them all.” and 2 Corinthians 4: 8 & 9 “we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” In both passages, there is an acknowledgment from that adversity and affliction come, but they don’t have the final word. It is a reminder that Jesus has ultimately won the victory.
Terri,
Thanks so much. Those are two great examples, and I will add them to my list. 🙂
